'Toughing it out': Led by veteran coaches and seniors, Spartans sprint to 4-0 start

So far so good for the Grace Davis High Spartans.

There’s nothing wrong with a 4-0 start – via an average score of 41-8 – capped last week by a Western Athletic Conference-opening 43-7 victory over Mountain House.

Head coach Tim Garcia likes the senior leadership of Isaac Martinez, Victor Rojas and Jose Sanchez, who seek a fifth straight win Friday night against Los Banos. The Spartans recovered from a slow start last week via a 28-point third quarter.

“I’m excited for the kids to be in the situation they’re in,” Garcia said Monday at the Modesto Quarterback Club’s fourth meeting of the season. “I’m super proud of them…going through the adversity with COVID like everyone else…they’re kind of just toughing it out.”

Garcia’s program is in place with veteran assistant coaches Mike Glines and Matt Chachere. Like them, Los Banos features experienced leadership in head coach Dustin Caropreso, who nurtures a roster spiced by sophomore talent. The Tigers (1-3, 1-0) opened WAC competition last week with a 42-0 win over Beyer.

Davis expects to be strengthened this week by the addition of senior quarterback Jayson Munthe, a Beyer transfer.
